Larry's 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne MY 1958 BISCAYNE Growing up in Melbourne I can remember seeing the 60’s Chevs cruising down High Street Northcote and thinking how cool they looked. In 1991 my family moved from Melbourne to Rutherglen and then later to Wodonga. One day whilst driving my 1986 Commodore I decided that it was time to start cruising in style and undertook the search for one of the “cruisers” that I could recall from my childhood. Living in the country and traveling the country roads I thought the time was right. I eventually found a nice original 1965 BelAir from Bendigo which I drove everywhere including two trips to Brisbane to visit relatives. This was followed by a 1968 Impala then a 1956 210 which never hit the road and was sold sight unseen to a guy in Brisbane. I did have a liking for the Chevs from the 50’s and one day I was looking through a three month old copy of Unique Cars Magazine. A red and white 1958 Biscayne was for sale in Albury and it was the same car that I had tried unsuccessfully to buy some 2 years earlier. What the heck I will ring the guy anyway…. Just in case. To my surprise the guy had not sold the car “as everyone wants to steal it – not buy it !” Well an inspection was arranged and a deal done shortly thereafter. My wife Heather who had failed to make the connection with the Chevs previously even raised a smile when we went to collect the 58 and of course all three of my daughters convinced Heather that this was a cool car. The previous owner was a young fella so I had to remove all the Rock ‘n Roll stickers from around the car – Nothing against Rock ‘n Roll mind you it’s just that all things have a place in life – and at my place we don’t put too many stickers on cars!! Just a note on the young fella who sold me the car…. He went out and bought a Dodge Phoenix!! Enough said!! I have had the car eleven years now and it is definitely
a keeper – my girls would disown me if I even thought about
selling “Honey” as she was nicknamed many years ago. It
is fitted with a 350 and Powerglide, Electronic Ignition and the interior
is red leather and matching door trims etc. I had the motor rebuilt
5 years ago and significant head work and it is a lot more responsive
that the car I purchased 11 years earlier. Last March 2005, I decided
to bite the bullet and gave the car a complete bare metal re-spray
and re-chromed all the bumpers and polished all the side stainless.
