Jon's 1968 L79 Corvette Coupe Factory Options: Original Colour: Safari Yellow
(Now Silver) Known History Originally from Michigan,
USA, the 68 Corvette was first purchased by Jon in California, in
September 1988 for a sum of US$4900 and then imported into Australia
together with a 1976 L48 Corvette Coupe. After a somewhat long and drawn out restoration and steering conversion by Jon, the 68 finally achieving it's first Australian (legal) test drive, a week before Christmas 1998. (That's a long wait for a Christmas present!) After a year or so, it was decided it was time for an engine and transmission rebuild, as although these seemed OK, they were a bit of an unknown, being the only components not dealt with in the restoration, and after a lap at 130mph at about 6500rpm at Holden's Lang Lang Vehicle proving ground, were considered a little bit of a worry for future driving events. The rebuilt engine (close as practical to factory L79 specs, apart from it's new lower 9.7 : ! compression ratio) and transmission, were refitted to the car on a Sunday, run in on the Dyno and roughly tuned on Monday (developing a rear wheel 252hp at 5000rpm and 595 lb.ft of torque), and then driven from Melbourne to the 2000 Sydney Corvette Convention a few days later. To date, the 68 is driven about twice a month, only due to lack of time, and still so far reliable, with nothing broken or having fallen off! (Fingers crossed!)
